Causes of the Great Texas Blackout
Professor Coleman will discuss the causes of the Texas blackout including record demand for natural gas and a sudden drop in gas supply. He will explain the reasons that gas demand is getting spikier, with fuel-saving technologies lowering regular use but even more dependence on gas in times of crisis. And he will discuss some potential solutions and how they might impact gas producers moving forward.
James Coleman is an Associate Professor at Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law. He received two degrees from Harvard University — a J.D. and B.A. in biology. After law school he practiced energy and appellate law in the Washington, D.C. firm of Sidley Austin. Before SMU, he taught at the University of Calgary’s law school and business school. He also served the provincial government as part of the Alberta Royalty Review expert panel, which reformed and modernized management of Alberta’s vast oil and gas resources. Before Calgary, he served on the faculty at Harvard Law School as a Lecturer on Law. Professor Coleman’s scholarship explores how global energy companies respond to competing pressures from investors and regulators in multiple jurisdictions. Professor Coleman teaches Oil & Gas Law, Energy Law, International Petroleum Transactions & Energy Development, and Energy Transport and Trade.
